Artist’s Statement for this Exhibit:
I view myself as being part of the long tradition of Western still life painters. My work has ranged from a somewhat formal approach (albeit, representational) to my most recent endeavors, which focus on overt narratives that are derived through symbolism. Within this current vein of work, my long-held interest in the human form has been incorporated via the use of toy figures, statuettes, trophy toppers and photographs as subject matter. A potent means of engaging viewers, and one that has significant expressive potential, the human figure holds great interest for me and has played an important role in the development of my present work.
Themes in my works largely involve the human condition. I am deeply fascinated with the general, innate character flaws that impede human progress. I am hopeful that my work might evoke viewer consideration of the substantial matters found in each narrative.
Titles are important facets of my work and are carefully chosen. They involve the use of humorous wordplay, which is done with an aim of inducing initial viewer engagement with themes that can often seem grim. Titles usually go through several iterations before being paired with a painting. Viewers will note that there are two distinct parts to each title. The first of these presents my intended narrative for a piece; and the second simply lists an inventory of the objects in that setup. The second part is included to remind viewers that they are ultimately viewing a mere arrangement of objects and that any symbolism lying therein is principally reliant on the contextual circumstances of each scenario.
